One of the most popular topics in the history of hadith among Muslims is the time when it was written and it is known that the time of writing hadith was from the Sunnis in the early second century and was commanded by 'Umar b. 'Abd al-Azīz, the Umayyad caliph, and it is cited by traditions as proof. But what is the truth? How valid are these traditions? Is there any traditions to the contrary? The present study, by way of descriptive-analytical as well as library method, seeks to answer the above questions and ultimately shows that the story of 'Umar b. 'Abd al-Azīz and his command and the beginning of the writing of the hadith because it is mentioned by the Sunni public is not so credible and the traditions about it is very controversial and there is a lot of evidences available that indicates the writing of hadith is before this time, and practically talking about the time of beginning of writing hadith by his order is denied.
