One of the most brilliant pages in the history of Imam Ali (AS)'s life is the process of people's pledge of allegiance to him after the assassination of the third caliph. With the unprecedented willingness of people to pledge allegiance to him, it was expected that the Imam would respond positively to the people's call when the conditions were right, but contrary to expectations, he refused to accept the caliphate of the Muslims by saying "Call upon me and seek other than me." This statement has been interpreted differently in subsequent centuries and has become the source of questions and ambiguities. The Mu'tazilites considered this statement as evidence for the negation of the text of Imam Ali (AS), and some intellectuals have inferred from this statement the authenticity of the people's opinion and even the separation of religion from government. The commentators of Nahjul-Balagha have mentioned six meanings for this sentence. This essay seeks to express the wisdom of Imam Ali (AS)'s initial refusal to accept the caliphate by using a descriptive-analytical method, while answering doubts, and considering the geography of speech and evidence. The findings of the research show that the Imam addressed the people of his time in the capacity of a debater and in terms of the rule of obligation, meaning that you people who have denied the divine appointment of the Imam by forming the Saqifa Council, now choose someone who is in harmony with you according to your beliefs.
