The present study examines the relationship between *the process of textual understanding* in Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics and *the method of hadith analysis* in the thought of Allameh Javadi Amoli, aiming to open a space for constructive dialogue between two distinct epistemic frameworks. The need for this research arises from the contemporary challenge of interpreting religious texts through an approach that both draws on methodological advances in the humanities and maintains its grounding in sacred and theological principles.
The study’s main objective is to clarify points of convergence and divergence between the two thinkers on issues such as the role of reason, the multilayered nature of meaning, the autonomy of the text from the author, and the possibility or impossibility of meaning’s openness. Through this comparison, the research seeks to provide a perspective for improving methods of hadith interpretation.
The methodology is based on conceptual analysis and comparison, relying on Ricoeur’s key works—such as *Interpretation Theory* and *Time and Narrative*—as well as the exegetical and epistemological writings of Javadi Amoli.
The findings show that both thinkers emphasize moving beyond the surface of the text and acknowledge the active role of reason in understanding. However, they differ significantly regarding the origin of meaning layers, the ultimate aim of interpretation, and the text–author relationship.
Overall, the results suggest that a selective use of Ricoeur’s methodological capacities, combined with the preservation of the revelatory foundations central to Javadi Amoli’s thought, can offer an integrated and effective model for enhancing the systematic understanding of hadith texts.
