One of the doubts cast by non-Shī‘a scholars against Shī‘a traditions is the non-musnad (unsupported) chains of transmission of such traditions. This doubt is especially sensitive when it is applied to the traditions narrated by Imāms (a) from the Prophet (s). This paper provides narrative and intellectual reasons and mentions example traditions to prove the isnād of the chains of transmission of these traditions. It also presents the inherent authoritativeness of Imāms’ (a) words despite the seeming non-isnād in the chains of transmission of such traditions. Further, the paper provides a typology of chains of transmission in terms of the ways their chains of transmission are musnad, along with some examples. To this end, this study used a descriptive-analytical method. To collect data, we referred to Ḥadīth collections, especially the Four Shī‘a Ḥadīth Collections and the book Al-Maḥāsin, as the early Ḥadīth collections of Shī‘a. The paper sets out to prove the authoritativeness of these narrations by two general means: the inherent authoritativeness of Imāms’ (a) words and the connection of their words to the words of the Prophet (s). Connecting the narrations of Imāms to the Prophet (s) is used to demonstrate that Imāms’ words are the words of their fathers and ultimately the words of the Prophet (s). This way, in addition to acceptance by the Shī‘a, the opponents will have no other choice but to accept these traditions.
