Despite its broad application in Islamic studies, the “principles of hadith understanding” lack a systematic framework for extraction and classification. This article analyzes the intellectual foundations—both explicit and hidden—within Seyyed Jafar Shahidi’s commentary on Nahj al-Balaghah, highlighting its distinctive approach among previous works. By focusing on the concept of mabna and its semantic distinctions in Persian and Arabic, this study clarifies its separation from related terms such as principle (asl), rule (qa‘ida), and method (ravesh). Using an analytical-critical method rooted in textual evidence from Shahidi’s annotations, the research combines lexicographical, semantic, and contextual analysis. The findings demonstrate that Shahidi’s commentary embodies a range of visible and underlying principles, extending beyond translation to reflect systematic theological reasoning, textual authenticity, and careful literary and historical analysis. Notably, the study documents key assumptions, such as belief in the infallibility and knowledge of Imam Ali (a.s.), emphasis on authentic attribution of the text, critical manuscript review, preference for sound argumentation over authority, and validation through diverse textual and contextual clues. In terms of hadith research principles, Shahidi’s method is characterized by reference to lexicons and biographies, syntactic and rhetorical examination, and the careful use of narrative and historical evidence. This research thus offers a novel methodological model for identifying hidden principles in hadith scholarship and enriches approaches to Islamic textual analysis.
