Based on Orientalist analyses, the belief in the descent of Jesus at the end of times as the ruler and leader of Muslims in prayer is considered one of the most fundamental eschatological doctrines in Islam. According to this view, Jesus initially held the role of Islam’s savior, but over time, this role was gradually transferred to the Mahdi. Eventually, through Shi‘i reinterpretation, Jesus was placed behind the Mahdi in prayer to signify his allegiance. This study examines the credibility of this interpretation by collecting various versions of hadiths related to the end-time congregational prayer led by either Jesus or the Muslim Imam, employing two methods: identifying the earliest sources and textual-isnād analysis. The findings indicate that the narration depicting Jesus as leading the prayer without the presence of a Muslim Imam is neither the earliest version nor strong in its transmission. In contrast, the narration of Jesus following the Muslim Imam is not only older but, based on the common link theory, may be traced back to the first Islamic century, possibly to the Prophet or his companions. This narration was later emphasized and transmitted by Ibn Sīrīn in the early second century, who identified the mentioned Imam as the Mahdi. It is likely that in later periods, certain apocalyptic details were added to this narration, either derived from prophetic traditions or shaped by the interpretive efforts of transmitters.
