This research, utilizing a descriptive-analytical method, investigates the discursive confrontation of two narratives by examining 36 semantic usages of “kisa” in pre-Islamic and Islamic texts. The first is the Hadith al-Kisa, based on the Verse of Purification, which signifies the infallibility of the Ahl al-Bayt. The second is the narrative “O Allah, forgive al-Abbas” found in Sunni sources. The findings indicate that the use of “kisa” before Islam lacked any doctrinal connotation and merely symbolized honor, such as the Kiswah of the Kaaba. The narrative of Abbas’s forgiveness is a conscious adaptation of the Hadith al-Kisa which, through the addition of the phrase “O Allah, preserve him in his offspring” during the Abbasid era, was turned into a tool for legitimizing their five-century-long rule. By applying both textual and isnad (chain of transmission) criticism and demonstrating the fundamental opposition between purification and forgiveness, this study proves the Abbasid discursive distortion.
