The author of the article, through studies conducted on the approaches to hadith of scholars in the Islamic West (Andalus region, Morocco (Maghreb), Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya), analyzed the opinions of four of the most prominent hadith scholars in each region and examined two basic questions: first, what is the relationship and authority of text and reason vis-à-vis each other, and second, did these scholars have a lenient or strict approach when dealing with hadith? By answering these two fundamental questions, the author was able to identify criteria for hadith approaches that are divided into three main categories: textualist, rationalist, and esotericist. Each of these approaches has its own characteristics; in the textualist approach, there are Akhbarians and Zahirists, while in the rationalist approach, there are Usuli, theologians, and philosophers, and in the esotericist approach, there are mystics, Sufis, and approximationists. In addition, the author has also paid attention to the time scale in his study and has examined ten scholars from the first to the seventh century and another ten from the seventh to the fourteenth century. The reason for this choice is the existence of trends with a rationalist tendency in the specific conditions of that period from the seventh century onwards, which had a significant impact on the results obtained. In general, as we move away from the era of the formation of the hadith, the tendencies of rationalism towards textualism have gradually increased.
