Imam Husayn’s martyrdom epic of Qāzī Nu'mān’s book is one of the oldest surviving Shiite texts on martyrdom epics which similar to other historical-traditional books has not been immune from distortion and having tremendous influence on shia thoughts about 'Ashurā current as that some anti-Shiite consider the Shiite to be superstitious. This martyrdom epic is in some cases incompatible with certain events or historical traditions and in some cases has damaged the dignity of the infallible Imam (PBUH) or the family of Imams (PBUH) but has become the basis for the transmission of Shiite scholars in later centuries. In this review, after trying to evaluate the author's character and some explanations for his book, we attempt to point out some of these distortional attacks and to examine their historical and traditional contents.
