This study examines Imam al-Ṣādiq’s (peace be upon him) responses to the movement of Abū al-Khaṭṭāb, a current that, through the fabrication of hadiths, distortion of doctrines, and extremist exaggeration (ghulūw), posed a multilayered threat to the epistemic authority of the Ahl al-Bayt, the personal security of the Imam, and the cohesion of the Shiʿi community. The main question of the research is how the Imam confronted these threats and what objectives and functions his responses served. The central argument is that the Imam’s severe, diverse, and multilayered reactions were not merely emotional responses but part of a deliberate strategy aimed at simultaneously countering epistemic, security-political, and social threats. The study employs a descriptive-analytical method based on a re-examination and analysis of historical, biographical (rijāl), and hadith sources. The findings indicate that Imam al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him), through direct criticism of Abū al-Khaṭṭāb, cursing, public dissociation, network management, and Qurʾanic framing, was able to neutralize epistemic threats, preserve his religious authority, and strengthen the social cohesion of the Shiʿi community. Moreover, examining these responses offers a theoretical and practical model for managing deviant intra-religious movements and can provide criteria for confronting extremism and the misuse of religion in contemporary Shiʿi societies. This study demonstrates that Imam al-Ṣādiq’s (peace be upon him) intelligent confrontation with the movement of Abū al-Khaṭṭāb simultaneously addressed epistemic, social, and security threats.
