Intention is one of the fundamental elements in the Islamic ethical and jurisprudential system and plays a decisive role in determining the value of human actions and their consequences. The present study examines the apparent contradictions among Shiʿi narrations concerning intention and, drawing on the principles of hadith studies and jurisprudential rules, proposes approaches to resolving these apparent contradictions. The study aims to investigate the extent to which intention affects human actions and the consequences arising from it. In terms of its approach, this study is qualitative, while in terms of its type, it is descriptive-analytical, as it not only describes the transmitted narrations but also analyzes and interprets them. The findings indicate that there are three broad categories of Shiʿi narrations in this regard: the first considers intention, without qualification, as the criterion for reward and punishment; the second emphasizes the independent role of intention in determining reward and punishment; and the third does not regard mere evil intention, in the absence of the corresponding action, as warranting punishment. Analysis of the relevant hadiths indicates that the differences among these narrations arise from the distinction between mere intention and intention accompanied by practical preliminaries, or from differences in the degree of an individual's remorse and the firmness of the intention. The study concludes that punishment for an evil intention is realized only when it is accompanied by a firm resolve or practical action, whereas repentance and remorse may prevent punishment.
